Where to take an OET mock test online, and how to use the result
By the MedEngly clinical team, led by a UK based IMG doctor who came through this pathway.
A mock test is the closest you can get to exam day before exam day. Its value is not the number at the end: it is finding out what breaks when all four subtests come one after another, under real timing, when you are tired.
This guide covers where to take an OET mock online, what each option can and cannot tell you, and how to sit one so the result is worth acting on.
What a full mock involves
The full test runs roughly two and a half hours across the four subtests: about 40 minutes for Listening, 60 minutes for Reading, 45 minutes for Writing, and about 20 minutes for Speaking. Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in that order; Speaking can fall on a different day or time depending on your format and venue.
A useful mock reproduces the order and the timing. A set of separate practice tasks spread across a week is good practice, but it is not a mock: it never tests your Writing after two hours of concentrated Listening and Reading.
OET's own free sample tests
OET publishes free sample tests on its own website, for both the paper and computer formats. They are the authoritative source for what real tasks, case notes, and question types look like, which makes them the right place to learn the format. Check on the sample page what marking support comes with each one: for Writing and Speaking, a sample on its own tells you what the task looks like, not how your response would score.
Paid mocks from preparation providers
Many preparation providers sell full mocks, often with Writing and Speaking marked by a teacher. Before you buy, check three things: whether Writing and Speaking are actually marked against the criteria rather than given a single overall comment, how long marking takes to come back, and whether the mock runs in exam order with real timing. A result that arrives after your exam is no use for a final fortnight.
MedEngly's mock exam
MedEngly's mock is a four stage practice run: one task per subtest in the real exam order, Listening, Reading, Writing, then Speaking, each timed like the matching practice task. Speaking uses one role play rather than the real test's two. Writing and Speaking are marked instantly against the published criteria, and the run ends with one consolidated report and a readiness verdict against grade B (350). You can pause between parts, and if you skip a part, or no task is available for a part on your plan, the report says so rather than inventing a score.
The mock is available on the free plan using the free tasks; marking Writing and Speaking draws on your marked allowance in the same way as any other attempt. Every grade is practice feedback based on published OET criteria, not an official evaluation, and estimated grades are indicative.
How to sit a mock so it means something
Treat it like the exam: one sitting, real timing, no dictionary, no pausing to check an answer. Sit it about a week or two before your exam, early enough to act on what it shows.
Review it the next day, not the same evening, and turn the result into no more than three specific fixes, each tied to a criterion or a part type. A mock that ends in a vague feeling of doing badly has been wasted; one that ends in three named fixes has done its job.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Is there a free OET mock test online?
OET publishes free sample tests on its own website, which are the best free source for the format. MedEngly's mock exam is also available on the free plan using the free tasks, with Writing and Speaking marking drawn from the free allowance of one marked letter and one marked role play.
How accurate are online OET mock test scores?
Treat any mock score as indicative. Only OET issues official results, and mock scores vary with the marker and the task. The most useful output of a mock is a per-criterion picture of where you lose marks, not a single predicted number.
When should I take an OET mock test?
About one to two weeks before your exam. That leaves time to fix what the mock exposes without adding fatigue in the final days. Taking a mock the day before the exam is rarely worthwhile.
Does an online OET mock include Speaking?
It depends on the provider. Some mocks cover only Listening, Reading and Writing; others include a Speaking role play with a teacher or a simulated patient. MedEngly's mock includes one Speaking role play, run by voice with a simulated patient and marked from the transcript, where a Speaking task is available on your plan.
