OET GUIDES · LAST REVIEWED 9 JULY 2026
How long are OET results valid, and how many times can you take it?
By the MedEngly clinical team, led by a UK based IMG doctor who came through this pathway.
Two practical questions decide a lot of OET planning: how long your result stays valid, and how many times and in what way you can sit the test. The answers come from two different places, OET for the test mechanics, and your regulator for what they will accept, and candidates often confuse the two.
This guide separates them. Specific rules and windows change, so confirm the current position with OET and with your regulator before you plan around any figure here.
How long an OET result is valid
OET results carry a validity period, and separately, the regulator or employer you apply to sets how recent a result they will accept, which can be shorter. A result that is still valid in OET's terms can still be too old for a particular regulator. Always check the acceptance window of the specific body you are registering with, not just the test's own validity.
How often you can take OET
OET runs frequently, on paper and on computer, so in practice you can sit it again relatively soon after a result rather than waiting months. The real constraints are usually availability of dates in your location and your own preparation time, not a fixed cooling-off period. Check dates early, because popular centres fill up.
Retaking a single subtest
You can book and retake individual subtests rather than the whole exam, which matters when one subtest, usually Writing or Speaking, is your only obstacle. Retaking one subtest is cheaper and lets you concentrate your preparation where it is needed.
Whether your regulator will accept a single retaken subtest combined with your earlier grades is a separate question with precise conditions and a time window, and it varies by body. Verify it before you rely on a single-subtest retake strategy.
Combining grades across sittings
Some regulators accept your best grades combined across two sittings within a defined period; others require all subtests at the required grade in one sitting. This one rule can change your whole plan: if combining is allowed, you protect strong subtests and retake only the weak one; if it is not, you must clear everything together. Confirm the current rule with your regulator first.
COMMON QUESTIONS
How long are OET results valid?
OET results have their own validity period, but the regulator or employer you apply to sets how recent a result they accept, which may be shorter. Check the acceptance window of the specific body you are registering with, since a result valid to OET can still be too old for them.
How many times can you take OET?
There is no fixed limit that makes you wait months; OET runs frequently on paper and computer, so you can generally resit relatively soon. The practical limits are date availability in your area and your preparation time.
Can you retake just one subtest of OET?
Yes. You can book and retake individual subtests rather than the whole exam, which is useful when only Writing or Speaking is holding you back. Whether your regulator accepts that subtest combined with your earlier grades is a separate rule to confirm with them.
Do regulators accept OET grades combined from different sittings?
Some do, within a set time window; others require all subtests at the required grade in one sitting. This varies by regulator and changes, so confirm the current rule with the body you are registering with before planning a single-subtest retake.
